I have always wondered about Popeyes Chicken. Why is it called "Popeyes"?
The famous cartoon character is not part of the advertising, and the one food item Popeye
was famous for, spinach, is not even on Popeyes' menu. But when I learned that the
founder of Popeyes was a devout Catholic from Louisiana, a state so Catholic that the
counties are called Parishes, I looked again and saw in the seemingly innocent name
the evidence of a fiendish Papist plot, the likes of which had not been seen since the
Gunpowder episode of 1605. You may not have noticed consciously, but your subconscious
may have taken in how the middle e slants slightly to the left and the y slightly to the right
dividing the name into the two words "Pope yes." Perhaps the popularity of
the present Polish Pope is the result of this subliminal advertising campaign? When the
Vatican's Swiss guards sail up the Potomac, seize the White House, and are welcomed
enthusiastically by drumstick-waving converts, remember you read it here first.
